Just In: Salon by Athena Calderone

Salon

An homage to a sumptuous moment in time, Salon is an evolution of our partnership with designer Athena Calderone. Capturing, in essence, the architecture of a memory, this subtle yet expressive collection finds its rhythm in the sinuous curves and geometric glamour of 1920 and 1930s design.

Our Story

Learn More
  • Weavers in the Beni Studio

    The Studio

The Beni Studio is an 8,000 square foot hub of craft - where 85 weavers work next to a sun-flooded courtyard, where the thump of hammers against wool fills the air, and where our team explores new possibilities of an age-old art. It’s the purest expression of who we are and the first vertically integrated facility of its kind in Morocco.

  • Weavers hands

    Fair Trade Certified

The Beni Studio is certified as Fair Trade by Label Step, a Swiss NGO focused on the handmade rug industry. Composed of 85 weavers, our growing in-house weaving team works from two thoughtfully designed ateliers just outside of Marrakech. Less experienced weavers work alongside master weavers, honing their craft while ensuring that each rug is woven by a weaver who has reached the pinnacle of her craft.

  • Washers hanging a rug to dry.

    The Beni Difference

Washing is where the magic happens. Our expert team’s deft touch creates uniquely soft, decadent rugs. Each finished Beni rug is washed up to five times and dried on handmade racks under the desert sky. Our proprietary washing process took us three years of research and development to perfect. The top secret process locks in color fastness while softening the wool’s natural fibers to achieve a lustrous sheen and velvety feel. Bring on the lounging.

  • Wool on racks

    The Wool

It starts at the source. We are committed to working with only the most exceptional materials. We've partnered with a 3rd generation company to procure heritage quality, 100% live wool, shorn humanely from sheep with the longest, silkiest fleece. Nothing else will do.

Our weaving techniques

Our methods of rug-making are categorized by their regional roots, as is the tradition in the history of the medium. From the sweeping peaks of the High Atlas Mountains and the shifting ergs of the Sahara desert to the rich heritage of Morocco’s capital city, each medium of Atlas, Zahara, and Rabat offers its own origin story.

  • Beni Knotted Rug Weaving Technique

    Atlas

Rugs born from the Atlas method offer a taller, standard pile height that averages around 1.25 inches but is available as low as 0.8 inches. Shaggy and so very soft, the wool shorn for these rugs first finds its magic in the relationship between the sheep and the shearer, a respectful bond that's been alive for eons. The Atlas technique is one that adds instantaneous spirit into a space. Its higher pile is lush and inviting, as if reaching out to the interior with a warm hello.

  • Beni Flat Weave Technique

    Zahara

More restrained than the shag appeal of Atlas, our Zahara rug construction dials in on the details of this ancient craft. Like grains of sand, thousands of tightly woven strands of woolen yarn merge together in impressively squished configurations that offer a tidy and light feel underfoot.

  • Detail of Beni Rabat Technique

    Rabat

Rabat is our revival of the R’bati carpet, a hyper-fine knotted style with roots that date back to Morocco’s palatial interiors of the early 19th century. Constructed from the highest quality fine wool, rugs born from this method consist of 64 knots per square inch versus the 15 knots of a shaggy Atlas design. The intricacy of this added effort allows for more creative liberty within the rug’s design.

Obscura Collection

Twilight ritual is the foundation for a collection inspired by the interplay of light and shadow, reality and dream, and games of chance. The mood board for this collection pinned jungle paintings by Rousseau next to obscure film stills.
